Truth and Reconciliation

We continue to look for ways that we can learn the truth of our history, listen to indigenous voices, practice reconciliation and take action. One of the ways we take action is to financially support Water First so that this organization can provide opportunities for education and provision of safe water in indigenous communities.

Call to Action #62 EDUCATION

Make information about residential schools, treaties, indigenous contributions a mandatory part of the curriculum

 

Call to Action #48 UNDRIP

This call urges the faith community to implement the principles, norms and standards of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a framework for reconciliation.

 

Call to Action #46,#49. DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY and TERRA NULLIUS

Repudiate those concepts that have been used throughout history to justify sovereignty over Indigenous Peoples and lands.

 

Call to Action #48, #60, #61 INDIGENOUS SPIRITUALITY

Educate clergy, laity and candidates for ministry to respect in its own right, Indigenous Spirituality as “a valid form of worship equal to their own.”

 

Call to Action #59 ONGOING EDUCATION

Provide to our members ongoing education on the church’s role in colonization and the Indian Residential School System.

 

Call to Action #46  COVENANT OF RECONCILIATION

Develop and sign a Covenant of Reconciliation with other parties to the Settlement Agreement.

 

Call to Action #61 PERMANENT FUNDING

Provide permanent ongoing funding for projects that promote Indigenous healing and reconciliation, culture, language and spirituality.

 

Call to Action #73,#74,#75 MAINTAIN CEMETERIES

With Indigenous groups and the Federal Government, support initiatives to provide a registry of children buried at schools, notify families, and properly maintain cemeteries.
